  •          Identification System and Forest Tracing

    • (Researcher) Dr. Elvio Luiz Schelle(PhD) ¹
    • Kleber Denis Pinto ²

    • Forest Inventory
Field Demarcation of all the remaining commercial trees and seed holders that nowadays are made of aluminum platelets, by the IWF TAG (Chip), thus, making possible, in a cryptographed way, to record the geographic coordinates and all the tree information such as: the scientific and vulgar name, height, diameter, volumetry, etc.

    • Project elaboration
To impede on errors in data collection in the fields which guarantees security and information veracity eliminating the generation of the VIRTUAL CREDITS (non-existent wood, false volumetry, substitution of the species) which means that the amount of physical and accounting wood will always be the same.

    • IWF TAG (Chip):
Chip distribution will be totally controlled. It will follow a specifc numbering method.

  •          Carbon Credit

    • (Researcher) Dr. Elvio Luiz Schelle(PhD) ¹
    • Kleber Denis Pinto ²

    • Types of accepted projects:
      » CDM – Mechanism of Clean Development-ONU
» TCR – Certified Reduction of Emissions

    • WHAT IS THE CERTIFIED REDUCTION MARKET OF EMISSION (TCR)?
It is a market created by the transactions of buying and selling of RCE that can be purchased, also by
companies belonging to countries of the annex B, aiming at lessening their goals of emission reduction.
The TCR is a unit transmited by the Executive Council of the MDL (ONU), as a result of the activity of an
MDL project . It represents the removal or the non-emission of a metric ton equivalent to carbon dioxide
      by the company.

    • WHAT IS CDM? (Clean Development Mechanism)
The underlying idea to CDM can be summarized in the observation that the reduction of a GEGs unit,
transmitted in consequence of some industrial process or “sequestrated” from the atmosphere voluntarily
by a company located in a developing country, can be negotiated in the global market with industrialized
countries( or companies in the countries) that need these “credits” to fulfill their goals for reduction of
the emission of gases with the Kyoto’s Protocol. So through this flexible mechanism, it is possible
to reduce the GEGs global emissions and at the same time it is an important alternative for the sustainable
      development of the emergent countries.

  •          Multielement Analysis of Tree Bark with Special Reference to Measurement and Mapping of Air
    Pollution

    • Elvio Luiz Schelle
    • This thesis has the objective to investigate the use of tree bark for monitoring heavy metals in the environment
in urban centers and industrial regions in the UK and in the vicinity of gold mining regions in Brazil. In addition to
producing multielement concentration data sets a key aspect of the research is to produce new elemental
distribution maps for urban regions. EDXRF is the main analytical technique used for analysis but, in the case of
Hg, ICP-MS with laser ablation was utilised. Following an introduction about the sources and fates of heavy metals
and environmental pollution, subsequent chapters deal with method development (EDXRF and LA-ICP-MS) studies
on heavy metals (particularly Hg), survey analysis (Sheffield) and map production.

  •         Use of the vetiver grass (vetiver system) to hold the slopes in public road, drainage protection and marginal areas.

    • Elder de Lucena Madruga ¹
      Elvio Luiz Schelle ²
Fernando Ximenes de Tavares Salomão ³

International experience demonstrates that the use of the Vetiver System sometimes combined with others plants,
wood structures or other materials has been very efficient and of low cost in the stabilization of slopes and public
road embankments in the protection of drainage structures and of regions in which the rainwater is dumped. The
key to sucess is the good quality of planting material and the right technique of application in the region. The slopes
and embankments are many times important sources of sediments released by the erosion that cause the silting in watersheds .

    • On the left, transversal cut to a vetiver barrier, showing the capacity to create a natural terrace. On the right, an elucidative picture: the leaves and the vetiver stalks slow the runoff of water with sediment to the point (A), causing the sediment to be deposited upstream from the plant (B), and the water continues to flow through the slope (C), in a lower velocity. The spongy root system of the plant (D), fixes the soil until the depth of three meters. The roots make a dense curtain interfering in the underground water flux.

The Vetiver System can be used to estabilize roads, protecting slopes and embankments, natural slopes and
drainage. TDr. P.K.Yoon( from Malaysia) and Dr. Diti Hengchaovanich ( from Thailand) are the pioneers in the
applications of the Vetiver System in building public road. The maintenance of public roads is expensive,
in general, common. The Vetiver System has a positive relationship benefit / cost, being a solution for a long time.
